I knew Gary as a neighbour, a co-worker, a friend and finally a teacher and mentor.
I was privileged to have been able to write this one page biography of his background in Karate.
About Sensei Gary Parks
Involved in the martial arts since age 19, Sensei Gary Parks originally started his martial art career in Taekwondo in 1971. After training for a year in that martial art style, he very quickly moved on to Chito-Ryu Karate which he found better suited to his body type.
Sensei Gary Parks trained for ten years in that style for five hours a day, five days a week. Doing so earned him great speed, endurance, and skill. During this time, he attained the level of 2nd Dan.
Additionally, he also trained in a complementary Chito-Ryu Karate weapons form called Kobudo-Jitsu which included weapons such as the bo, nun-chucks, sai, sickle and the Japanese katana sword.
Sensei Gary Parks, trained with notable individuals such as Dr Tsuyoshi Chitose, Chiti-Ryu O-Sensei Masami Tsuruoka, Chito-Ryu O-Sensei Masami David Tsuruoka, Chito-Ryu/Shotokan Karate; and, Sensei Hagashi, Chito-Ryu.
Later he joined the Shotokan Karate system in Shediac, NB for five years, where he attained the level of 1st Dan. He trained extensively with Sensei Alcide Bourque who became a very inspirational mentor.
From that point onward, now Sensei Gary Parks, assisted Sensei Alcide Bourque in teaching. Eventually, Sensei Gary Parks established his own dojo in downtown Dartmouth for a period of six years during the early 1970's.
Teaching scores of students, Sensei Gary Parks was most inspirational to children, who not only learned the fine art of Karate, but about proper conduct in their behaviour and how to respect themselves and others.

To Gary's family.
So sad to hear of Gary's passing. We shared a passion for hunting and swapped stories at DREA continually. Gary was always ready to lend a hand both at work and at home. He was among the several friends from the lab that showed up to help shingle my roof when I lived in Middle Sackville; he was fearless and a hard worker.

Sending all of my love to Gary's friends and family, and thinking of his girls during this difficult period of transition. Forever genuine, with a smile, laugh and a word of encouragement for everyone, Gary set the example for how to be the best version of oneself. More than anything, he wanted his girls to be the happiest. While this time is so very difficult, may you each take solace in knowing that he will be with you forever in the beautiful memories you will hold close always. All of my love.

So sorry for your loss. I worked with Gary for many years at DRDC. He was a lovely man, always smiling.
Gary was an outdoorsman through and through. He never bragged but loved to tell a story about his latest catch. He spoke with great pride about his children and grandchildren. RIP dear man.

One of the better guys in world gone. We had so many great times that took in a lot of NS from fishing, hunting and working on projects. How many times we shared stories and great times with friends either going for a quick meal nature provided on water and on land always searching for the excitement that went along with the comradery. Many heavy hearts including mine will long remember his smile. God bless.
