Obituary of Marie Ona Turner
Please share a memory of Marie to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Age 94, passed away peacefully with her eldest daughter Bev Turner at her side in Harbourview Lodge, Sheet Harbour. Born on December 6, 1927 in Tangier, Marie was the daughter of the late Murray and Ivy (Mason) McCarthy. After graduating high school, Marie and some of her sisters moved to Truro and attended Nova Scotia Teacher's College. Once graduating, Marie moved back to the Eastern Shore where she taught in Sheet Harbour Passage and Mushaboom. During Marie's teaching career, she met Sherman while living in Port Dufferin. After she and Sherman married, they had five children. Marie left her teaching career and went to work for Parker Turner at his store for 30 plus years as bookeeper and cashier. She then worked at the Moser River Post Office for several years before retiring at the age of 70 and then she moved to Dartmouth. Marie was a dedicated member of Guild for St. John's Anglican Church in Necum Teuch and also a member of the order of the Eastern Star. She always looked forward to her yearly trip with her sisters. She loved spending time with her family and was especially loved by her grandchildren for her homemade sweet rolls that compared to no other. Marie was a friend to everyone and a second mother to a lot of young people in the community. Survived by children, Beverly Turner (Rick Stein), Janet (Stewart) Holland, Anne (Stewart) Martin, Arthur (Carla), Susan (Phillip) Gammon; grandchildren, Erin, Alicia, Sarah, Tylor, Lawson, Layton, Mitchell and Melissa; step grandchildren, Jennifer and Gabriel Mercier; great-grandchildren, Kyle, Connor, Wesley, Ryleigh, Payton, Flynn, Morgan and Roy; sisters, Gloria McCluskey, Dorothy LeBlanc and Jean Keating. Predeceased by husband, Sherman; brothers, Sterling and Phillip; sisters, Marjorie Smiley, Marion Gallagher and Helen Turner. Cremation has taken place. Service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Marie's memory to St. James Anglican Church. Marie's children would like to thank Dr. Don MacDonald and the staff at Harbourview Lodge for their loving care of their Mom. Email condolences may be sent to: www.crowellsfuneralhome.ca
