Obituary of Merna Estelle Russell
Age 87, Lochaber Mines. It is with heavy hearts that we had to say goodbye to our wonderful, loving mother, sister, nanny, aunt and friend on April 16, 2019 in Harbourview Lodge, Sheet Harbour. Born in Lochaber Mines September 26, 1931, she was a daughter of the late John Alexander and Muriel (Cameron) MacDonald. She was an avid softball player and was still hitting home runs at the age of 62. She also enjoyed bowling, darts, playing cards, going to the local dances and she also loved to collect dolls. She is survived by children, Ron, Malay Falls; Doreen (Rick) Cummings, Ottawa; Marilyn (Tony) Monk, Porters Lake; Randy (Wilma), Lochaber Mines; Charlene MacDonald, Lochaber Mines, and was a second mother to Leonard Malay, Spryfield; grandchildren, Robert (Nicole) Spracklin, Tanya (Mike) Lindsay, Jason Russell, David (Annaleigh) Monk, Stephanie (Ryan) Williams, Sandi (Noel) Russell, Amanda (Will) Russell-Gilligan, Christopher (Susie) Russell, Matthew Carr; great-grandchildren, Macayle, Tyler and Keagen Lindsay, Zachery Spracklin, Chase, Noel and Aubrey Wall, Lillian Russell, Mia Gilligan, Connor Russell, Emjay Monk, Addison and Rosalie Wil liams; sister, Avis (Harold) Publicover, Dartmouth; brother, Floyd (Marion), Lochaber Mines; Adrian, Dartmouth; Fred (Joanne), Kitchener, Ont.; daughter-in-law, Patricia Russell, also special friend and sister-in- law, Phyllis "Fluffy" Martin, Malay Falls. Predeceased by husband, Earl; son, Philip; grandson, Tyson Monk; sisters, Faye Naugler, Florence DeWolfe and Cora in infancy; brothers, Donald, Alvin, Ronald; daughter- in-law, Wendie Russell. Visitation will be held Tuesday, April 23rd from 7-9 p.m. in D.S. Crowell & Son Funeral Home, 22558 Hwy. 7, Sheet Harbour. Funeral Service will be held Wednesday, April 24th at 2 p.m. in St. James United Church, Lochaber Mines; Rev. Kym Burke-Cole officiating. Burial in the church cemetery. Reception to follow in the Masonic Lodge, Sheet Harbour. Family flowers only, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia or Harbourview Lodge, Sheet Harbour. A special thank you to the doctors and wonderful staff at Harbourview Lodge for their amazing care shown to Merna and her family during her lengthy stay. My father the late Duncan S. Crowell purchased the business on August 31, 1970 from the late Parker Hamilton. Dad named it Eastern Memorial Funeral Home until a few years later when he changed the name to DS Crowell Funeral Home.
