I met Ralph when we attended the Carpentry class at DRVS. We quickly became friends as we held similar attitudes towards the trade and our work ethic. Ralph was an exceptional craftsman and a darn fine carpenter. After DRVS we worked together for a year and then Ralph went to work for Bill Diepenbrock. I started with Bill shortly thereafter. Ralph and I worked together for a number of years forming a close bond. Ralph was an avid outdoorsman, gardener, carpenter, and a good friend. We had lost contact these past few years which I regret but he remained in my thoughts. Rest in peace Ralph.

Ah, Cousin Ralph.
So soon you were taken. May your soul rest happily on some spit of land by a roaring sea along the coast of Heaven’s abyss. Or when adventure strikes, let there be a rising tide and a leading star to guide your spirit through peaceful waters, no matter what craft you choose.
I miss you, Dear Cousin. Too bad banishment and fate set us apart over the years, for I share your love of land, the feeling of a roaring tractor’s engine underfoot by day, and the call of the wild by night.
Rest easy Dear Cousin,
Brian Day

Q: What will you never forget about Ralph?
A: My name is Theresa. I am the girlfriend of 27 plus years of his brother Ken. I am very sad of the passing of Ralph. He had a natural way of making me feel welcomed and accepted. From the first time we met. Whenever I fly to NS, I say to Ken "Let's go down to visit Ralph". I am really going to miss him. I will keep him in my heart and in my memories. The three of us had some great conversations over the years. He loved to speak with people about various subjects. Ralph, I hope you are resting in peace. I believe that we will meet again. Until then.

We are sending our deepest condolences to the Balcolm family. Although we did not see Ralph often, it was always a pleasure to see him and chat when we were at our family camp. Ralph had a true interest in people and was aways so kind and engaging. Beaver Harbour will not be the same without him.
Thinking of you all, Sandra (Cross) & Edgar Pottie

Sending our most sincere condolences for your loss. Although it has been a number of years since I have seen Ralph, I have fond memories. He was always so kind when we would visit my father Jack. Ralph allowed my kids to explore his garden, the beach and ride his tractor. May he rest peacefully.

Ralph was one of my older brothers. He was about nine years older than me.
When I was about 8 years old Ralph built me my very own row boat. I didn't ask him to build it, he did it all on his own. It was about five feet from bow to stern. He even made custom oars. And after a year or so, he let me use his electric trolling motor with an old car battery. Our brother Norm installed a steering wheel from an old washing machine pulley and some old clothes line cable. I was ahead of my time with my miniature electric speed boat! I would cruise along the shore in Beaver Harbour pretending I was Nick Adonis or Relic from the Beachcombers. That little boat provided me countless hours of fun! And it has proven to be one of my most cherished childhood memories. I still have a picture of me in that little boat displayed on my desk.
Ralph and I spent many hours together over the years: fishing, boating, snowmobiling, exploring backroads in 4x4's, cutting firewood and logs were just some of the things we enjoyed together. He even gave me jobs helping him with carpentry jobs. He taught me how to shingle a roof. He was my brother and best friend. I look back and cherish my childhood and wish I could go back and relive it again.
I am very grateful and fortunate to have had Ralph as a brother. He will be missed but never forgotten.

Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to family during this difficult time.
Ralph, my dear cousin, cherished sea captain, and fearless off-road driver, led us through countless unforgettable summers Down East. With every adventure, he brought excitement, fun, and lasting memories.
Whether navigating the open sea or exploring rugged trails, Ralph showed us the true meaning of exploration and the importance of family. The time spent racing against the tide, fishing, off-roading or gathering around the campfire will forever remain etched in our memories.
Ralph’s warmth and spirit will never be forgotten, and he will always have a special place in our hearts.
With love, June and Dave

Ralph was a great neighbour and friend. He always kept an eye on our camp when we weren’t there and was always there to help with anything we needed.
He will be missed by our family. He always had treats for our grandkids and loved to show them his garden and let them pick something. It won’t be the same there without him. Deepest condolences to his family.

Ralph was my best friend when we were really little. Our backyards were separated by a wild rosebush hedge-lots of bees there, and thorns, but we found a way to play together. My memory of him then was of a bright spark, funny, smart and full of ideas of what adventure we could have next.
I still remember being very sad that he went to a different elementary school- walking North as I walked South. It meant we lost touch over the years but every time I was lucky enough to see him I was reminded of how much I loved him.

There's so many memories of Ralph in my house, from the built-in cabinets, the custom made end table, wooden fruit bowl and cutting board, and the raised bed garden which he filled with rich soil.
