For the 20 years that I knew Irene, every minute spent in her presence was a source of joy. Every year when the swallows' returned to the Tangier old Church Hall, Irene said to me "always remember these days, and I will return here every year with the swallows and we will remember each other. "
I also have a small painting in the entry hall of the Pleasant Harbour house that an artist Indian friend
of Irene painted. Irene took a special charity interest in Native Americans out West, and mailed special packages of sheets, towels, sweaters she knit for them every Christmas.
Irene taught at the Residential Schools with her Tangier School friend Bernice Logan. Sadly Irene's experiences there were not as positive as Bernice's.
I will miss Irene when I spend my Summers in Tangier, but the smiling, lovely blue eyed face on the Obituary captured the essence of Irene's pure soul.
If anyone is in Heaven Irene Nelson is.
Loved and appreciated your talents Irene. Maelissa

My sincere sympathy to Irene's loved ones. She was a kind presence in the community of Tangier. I fondly remember her during my younger years there as she was quietly attentive to her church and yes, she greatly looked forward to her berry picking. She appreciated nature. A lady of great faith has passed. It is comforting to know she was granted 93 years to share her pleasant ways. Always with a twinkle in her eye and enjoyable conversation. Fond remembrance, Faye (Slade) Hawes
