I never had the privilege of meeting Bernice in person but feel that I came to know her well over the past few years. We shared letters in Anglican Journal, there were occasional phone calls, and every once in awhile, there would be a package in the mail from Tangier with the latest clippings and articles. There would have been even more exchanges but Bernice didn't seem to have time to become involved with email, she was too busy with her "personal touch" approach and of course, that personal touch was one of the things that made her so special. I remember one phone call that had to be cut short, Bernice was in the midst of making a big batch of strawberry jam!
Her courage and tenacity in countering the various false narratives around the Residental Schools inspired awe. In these dark times, when fake news and false narratives seem almost to overwhelm us, her brave witness to her truth will remain an inspiration. And perhaps most worthy of our imitation, Bernice never seemed in any way angry or bitter when meeting so much unfair response, a true Happy Warrior, a model of charity for all.

Um she lived in denial. She reported knowing some children were sexually abused. How could she not see that children being disciplined and taken from their families wasn’t wrong? Residential school is not false narratives. It required deep healing of the people she had a part in victimizing. May Creator have mercy on her for all the Indigenous children she was around.

I'm so very sorry to hear of your family's loss. I didn't know Bernice very well myself, but it was always a joy to see her at various gatherings and church events on the Eastern Shore. Whenever she saw my mom and I, she would always make a point to stop for a bit to chat and her smile was truly lovely. I lost my mom, Gwen Hartley (Kennedy), in October and Bernice sent me a very thoughtful condolence on a piece of paper as she wasn't sure when she could get to a store for a proper card, but had wanted us to know that she was thinking of us. Her note truly touched my heart and I was looking forward to telling her that the next time I saw her. She will be greatly missed by so many.
Take care, one day at a time,
Angela & Keith Gallant

Dear Lucille, Jamie and Mary,
Although I have known Bernice for over 60 years, it's mainly in the last 15 or so that we became better acquainted. Our time spent on the Anglican Church Women Board gave us the opportunity to talk, listen and learn about each other. She had such a positive outlook on life and it was catching. Later, when my sister-in-law, Irene, was in Harbour View Lodge, Gerald and I would drop by and take her with us to visit Irene, have lunch, do some shopping, and have a visit with your mother back in Tangier. She was a wealth of knowledge about Tangier, indeed, the whole Eastern Shore, with great memories of the people and their stories. It was a privilege to know her and you were truly blessed to be her children. My sincere sympathy to you and your families. I pray that you will be sustained by God's grace and your wonderful memories of your mother. With love and prayers, Ethel.

To the family of Bernice Logan: What a loss to you all, to the church, the Eastern Shore region, Anglican Diocese, and community, near and far, with Bernice's passing. Please accept my personal condolences and all those of the members of the Anglican Church Women Board, Diocese of NS & PEI. Bernice was truly amazing and her service to the church and community was legendary. So many benefitted from her phone calls, notes, letters, knitting, and sheer energy for doing good! We are the better for having known Bernice and for being in her company. God has called her home and I expect that she is likely playing the organ in the celestial realm while figuring out how to direct the Eastern Shore Sunday School by mail! We hope that the heartfelt prayers and kind thoughts of others, along with your own wonderful memories, are a comfort to you all. In sympathy, Cynthia Pilichos, Co-coordinator of the Anglican Church Women Diocesan Board, on behalf of all the Board members: Carolyn Chenhall, Marjorie Davis, Selma Doucet, Connie English, Sheila Hulford, Janice Jackson, Ethel Nelson, Donna Parsons, Rev. Lori Ramsey, Bev Scammell, Maxine Simpkin, Sue Slauenwhite, and Anne Williams.

To the family,
We were heartbroken to hear of your precious loss. My mom and I have such fond memories of Bernice. We didn't see Bernice often, especially since my mom moved from Tangier. But when we did see her she was always an encouragement to us. Her smile and the joy she conveyed lit up a room. My mom and I thought the world of her and she would periodically call mom to check in on her to see how she was doing. I can't imagine how much you are all going to miss her.
Please know you are all in our thoughts and prayers.
With sincere condolences,
Olga Hawes and Gina Mosher

Cousins Lucille, Mary, Jamie and your families. I'm so sad to hear of the passing of my favorite Aunt. I remember her kindness and her unwavering ability to see the good things in every person. Like many Mason's she also persevered on having her views known. I travelled with her in Ontario when she was researching her books. What a wonderful opportunity it was to spend many hours getting to know her better and sharing stories. Because she saw and sought the truth she got to interact with many important people. She will be afforded a special place in Heaven. God Bless. Dave Hardy

This is such a sad time for me. I met Bernice Logan in 1989, when we were undergraduate students at Mount St Vincent University. She was studying for a Bachelors' Degree in Child Studies and I, in Tourism and Hospitality Management. Coming from the Caribbean Island of Grenada, with all its sunshine and warmth, to a very cold Halifax Nova Scotia, she brought warmth and laughter to my life. This wonderful soul invited me down to her lovely Tangier to spend some of my holidays and there I met her kind and welcoming sister Verna, and her mother, Mom Mason. The wonderful people of Tangier opened their arms and took me into their hearts. I, a young black woman from the Caribbean, struggling with the challenges of academic studies in a culture and climate that was far different from my own, found kindness and friendship in the beautiful people of Tangier Nova Scotia. I have been back many times to visit most recently for her 86 birthday. For the past 33 years, we have kept in touch by telephone, letters, Christmas cards, and Birthday cards. I will miss her. I will miss hearing her voice on my answer machine asking "Sally-Ann where are you? This is Bernice." She often forgot that there is a 5-hours difference in time. I will keep all my memories of her in a special corner of my heart. To Jamie, Mary and Lucille my deepest condolences to you and the rest of her family. My dearest Bernice, wherever you are, if you can, please keep an eye on that Grenadian girl that you embraced when she was a stranger in Halifax. Rest in Peace my beloved friend and hope we met again someday. Sally-Ann
